There are many teaching techniques and strategies that will provide a developmentally or physically disabled adult or teen in a group home the tools needed to reach their potential. Group home support staff can use them individually or in combination.
1. Specific Therapy Techniques-used in the practice of physical, occupational, communication, recreation, music, sensory integrative, or related therapies.
2. Environmental Engineering-strategies that alter or adapt the physical environment to reduce or eliminate the causes of the behavior or that interfere with the progression of a positive behavior or skill development.
3. Modeling-the trainer demonstrates the desired behavior and the resident will copy the desired behavior.
4. Prompts/Cues-signals used to engage in behavior. Signals can be naturally occurring in the environment. Signals provided by trainers include gestures, visual cues, verbal instructions, tactile cues, and physical guidance.
5. Verbal Instructions-type of Prompt/Cue involving instructing a person to do a task, demonstrated a behavior, or to stop a behavior. Instruction can be direct cues, indirect cues, or contingency statements.
Group home support staff spend the most time with the disabled residents in a group home. They are the residents main trainer on a daily basis.
