The story of Jason McElwain is an example of how a disabled person can surprise those around them with hidden and untapped skills. His joy, excitement, and appreciation of the chance he was given was contagious.
Sadly many group home support staff disable the abilities that disabled group home residents have.
It is done in the following ways:
Doing things for residents they could do themselves
Not teaching group home residents skills they have the ability to learn
Keeping residents from new experiences because of a fear of behaviors or inappropriate interaction in the community
Minimizing accomplishments
Group home support staff should remember that they are being paid, and even if tired, the residents count on them. Group home work is a casual atmosphere that is sometimes taken advantage of at the expense of the residents.
The next time you are tempted to do something yourself because you are tired or think you are in a hurry, remember the following video. Be the staff that develops the residents abilities, don’t be the staff that disables the abilities of the disabled.
The video is a motivating and inspirational story of a disabled person given a shot to show his abilities.
