The smile of a group home resident adult or teen is a great reward when working in this field. So often the group home support staffs’ shifts are filled with challenges and behaviors and lack of appreciation for their work. Not only does the residents not appreciate the value of learning independence, group home managers often take staff for granted.
Staff retention is something that will make managing a group home easier. Experienced staff has knowledge, loyalty, and experience that can help a group home run smoothly. One way to retain staff is to make sure they know they are appreciated and recognized. As a group home manager you may not be in control of their wages, but you can control how they feel about their job. Many employees will tolerate less pay to stay in a work environment that contains the following:
- Support
- Training
- Appreciation
- Rewards
An added bonus to a happy group home support staff is happy group home residents!
I’ve added a sub-category to Managers-Recognition. There are several upcoming posts that will give you ideas on how to recognize, reward, and appreciate your group home support staff. Many of them are low cost and no cost.
