Earth Day should be EVERY day! Earth Day began in 1970, there is more on the history of Earth Day here.
The past week or so there has been program information, events, and television specials about what people can do for planet earth. Well today is the day after, and I waited until today to post, because it is too easy to forget the inspiration that was started during the past week. We do something everyday to help the limited resources we have last as long as possible.
Group homes have many opportunities as individual homes and as companies to participate in Earth Day projects all year long.
As a company:
- Use florescent light bulbs. Even if it is too expensive to change every light bulb in every group home, start out with at least one lamp per house and increase as funds permit.
- Recycle paper
- When new vehicles are being purchased choose energy efficient vehicles
- Use recycled and earth friendly materials
- More ideas here
As individual group homes:
- Recycle
- Compost (worm boxes)
- Volunteer locally to help save the planet
- Unplug electronics when not in use
- Don’t run water during personal hygiene assistance
- Think about transport and recreation driving to minimize driving by consolidating trips
- More ideas here
As residents
- Teach about planet saving projects to residents
- Â Help residents to participate in a project
- Collecting cans helps with recycling and can bring in a small amount of income for residents.
- Have an “Earth Day” project every week or month

The publicity of Earth Day has died down in the media, but as group home support staff we all can keep it alive in our individual lives, in the group homes we work at, and encourage the residents we care for to participate in saving our planet.
Make a difference on our planet one staff, one resident, and one group home at a time.

Box Kites & Cellular Kites Kite Tails & Line Art
There’s a breeze in the air and the sun is shining. It’s easy to think about kite flying.
Local stores sell kites through out the spring and early summer. If it is off season and you still want a kite because you live in a part of the country that has kite flying weather throughout the year you can purchase kites online or make your own kite.
So pack a lunch, grab a kite, and everyone can enjoy an afternoon at the park and get some exercise! For residents who are not physically able to get a kite started, group home support staff can get it up in the air and assist residents holding the kite. Once the kite is high enough, they are usually easy to keep in the air.
