In the free downloads (designed for churches), is instruction on how to adapt teaching for various disabilities. The information can be used for various teaching situation in addition to teaching religious education.
Though publicly funded organization cannot promote a religion, disabled group home residents have a right to pursue their religious beliefs and as group home staff, we should be supporting that. Sometimes it is difficult if there isn’t a church that the resident can attend comfortably. If it is too difficult for the resident to be in church and have appropriate behavior like being quiet while others talk, it can interfere with them experiencing God.
If you can’t do anything within your employment parameters, you may still be able to make a difference as an individual.
If you know a church who wants to minister to special needs (disabled) adults and children or you want to support the religious beliefs of someone with special needs, there are free downloads available to use to take to a church or to use in a group home. You can find it at Life Way, free special needs downloads.
LifeWay has special needs courses for adults, children, and vacation Bible school. If you are unable to find a church that meets the needs of the disabled residents in the home, try approaching churches in the area and ask that they start a ministry (program). Find out how many staff and residents from the company that you work at would be interested in participating, this can help when approaching a church.
You may even be able to network with other staff and residents from other community living providers.
